So Your Teen is Off to Film School: A Parent’s Perspective on CMS

monikakrok

Making the transition from mainstream education to specialised training can feel daunting—for both parents and students. As a parent, you want reassurance that your child is stepping into an environment that will help them grow, learn, and thrive.

Lucy Pickering, whose son Jed is currently studying in the Art Department at CMS, shares her experience to give you an inside look at what makes CMS different from traditional universities and how it’s transformed Jed’s journey into the creative industries.

What Was Jed Doing Before CMS?

Before CMS, Jed was studying A Levels in Art, Maths, and Computing. Like many parents, Lucy anticipated he’d follow the traditional route of going to university. Prop making had always been Jed’s passion, and he’d planned to study it further at university. But when Lucy discovered CMS, everything changed.

What Makes CMS Different from Universities?

CMS offers Level 4 training to students aged 18+ and focuses on vocational, hands-on learning delivered by industry professionals. For Lucy, the difference between CMS and universities became clear while touring institutions.

“Touring universities with Jed, we’ve realised how advanced and practical the CMS course really is. Many ‘top’ university courses feel less connected to what the film industry actually needs. With the experience Jed’s gaining at CMS, he could go straight into the second year of some university degrees if he chooses to, saving a lot of time and money. But honestly, he might not need to—he’s already building an incredible portfolio. Another major bonus is that the course is free for students under 19, which makes it such a fantastic opportunity. It’s rare to find something so focused on preparing students for the industry without the big financial burden that often comes with further education.”

Unlike traditional higher education, CMS treats students like professionals from day one.

“The course is professional from day one. The students are taught by people actively working in the field, and they get a real sense of the broad range of careers within the art department. It’s not just model making—Jed’s explored computer design, 3D printing, set dressing, and even carpentry.”

What Opportunities Has Jed Had Since Starting?

One of the standout aspects of CMS is the industry connections and real-world opportunities it provides to students.

“On his non-college days, Jed’s already been doing professional work, including making miniature props for a Wuthering Heights adaptation and decorating a house for an indie Christmas film. He also got a week’s work building sets at Boomtown thanks to one of his tutors. It wasn’t just about skills—he got a sense of the wider jobs involved in set building and even had free camping, meals, and tickets to the festival. It was a fun and social week where he made new friends and gained valuable experience.”

How Does CMS Balance Flexibility and Structure?

With classes two full days a week, Lucy initially worried Jed might lack motivation on his days off. However, CMS empowers students to take initiative and use their extra time wisely.

“Jed’s used his spare time to teach himself new computer packages recommended by his tutors, improve his painting techniques, and even 3D-print prototypes for his end-of-year project. If a student has initiative, the extra time is such a gift—it lets them explore and develop their skills without being overwhelmed.”

What’s the Social Side Like?

While Lucy worried Jed might feel isolated with many of his friends heading off to university, the CMS community has proven to be tight-knit and supportive.

“CMS has a small, close-knit community. Jed’s made great friends, and they even organised their own trip to Berlin, where their final project is set.”

How Has CMS Helped Jed Grow?

Beyond the skills and experience, CMS has played a significant role in Jed’s personal development.

“The course has given Jed a sense of responsibility, accountability, and teamwork that has made him more mature. These are life skills that will benefit him in any career, especially in an industry where self-employment and collaboration are so important.”

Advice for Other Parents Considering CMS

Lucy wholeheartedly recommends CMS for students interested in careers behind the scenes in the film industry. She highlights the value of its free courses for students under 19 and the unique experience of being based at Pinewood Studios.

“It’s such a fantastic opportunity. CMS has given Jed opportunities we couldn’t have imagined, and being based at Pinewood definitely adds an exciting layer—he’s toured sets, seen the huge underwater filming pool, and even spotted stunt doubles and actors.”

Final Thoughts

For parents navigating this transitional phase, CMS offers reassurance that your young adult is stepping into a professional, supportive, and opportunity-rich environment. From industry connections to personal growth, CMS is paving the way for students like Jed to thrive in creative careers.
