Behind the Lens: Insights from Oscar Winner James Friend and RED Digital Cinema

RED Digital Cinema Workshop with James Friend

We were delighted to host an exceptional workshop for our Directing and Cinematography students. The day featured the incredible team from RED Digital Cinema, pioneers in cutting-edge camera technology, who shared their expertise and showcased the latest innovations like the V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO. Students had the unique opportunity to elevate their filmmaking skills with hands-on experience guided by industry legends James Friend and Peter Marsden.

Showcasing the Power of RED Digital Cameras

The day began with Red showcasing their cutting-edge camera equipment. Students learned about the technicalities of shooting digitally versus on film, including how to maximise resolution, dynamic range, and frame rates. James Friend praised RED's innovations, saying, “These cameras allow you to shoot cinema-quality films that can fit in a backpack. It’s incredible what you can achieve today.”

Exclusive Insights from Oscar-Winning Cinematographers

James Friend, Oscar-winning Director of Photography for All Quiet on the Western Front, and Peter Marsden, an accomplished cinematographer, shared their career journeys, offering a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most iconic productions of our time.

James began his journey as an electrician, mastering the craft of lighting from the ground up. This unconventional path gave him a strong foundation in the technical and creative aspects of cinematography. For James, lighting is the backbone of storytelling, setting the mood and bringing scripts to life.

James recounted how he has relied on RED cameras throughout his career, especially for the visually demanding scenes in All Quiet on the Western Front. One particularly thrilling moment involved using a Red camera to capture a tank rolling directly over it.

"It was a nerve-wracking moment," he recalled. "We weren’t sure if the shot would work, but the results were incredible. It’s about taking calculated risks and trusting your tools."

Peter Marsden started with commercials and gradually transitioned to larger projects. He described this progression as "organic," highlighting the importance of persistence and continually pushing forward, even in the face of challenges. “It’s not about rushing to get to the top—it’s about building your skills, one project at a time.” Both professionals emphasised the importance of perseverance in the industry. James advised:“You have to put yourself out there. Practice every chance you get, and don’t let rejection stop you. Every mistake is a lesson.”

He added, “Understand the other roles on set—whether it’s directing, editing, or sound. The more you understand the whole process, the better you’ll be at your craft.”

Hands-On Learning: RED Komodo Cameras in Action

The students then had the opportunity to work directly with RED Komodo cameras under the guidance of the RED team and James himself. They explored framing techniques, worked with advanced camera features like dynamic range and colour profiles, and experimented with lighting setups to create the perfect shot.

James encouraged the students, saying, “There’s no excuse not to experiment. The tools are accessible—go out, shoot, and tell your story.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Filmmakers

This workshop wasn’t just about technical skills—it was about inspiring the next generation of filmmakers to push boundaries, take creative risks, and trust their instincts.

James summed it up perfectly:“This industry is about persistence, passion, and collaboration. The more you learn, the better equipped you’ll be to create something extraordinary.”

We’re incredibly grateful to RED Digital, James Friend, and Peter Marsden for their time, insights, and dedication to mentoring our students.
