To be a screenwriter is to be a storyteller, shaping worlds and crafting narratives that captivate audiences. This course will equip you with the core principles of story design, structure, genre, audience, character development, and dialogue. Through hands-on learning, you’ll gain the essential skills needed to create scripts for film, TV, commercials, and digital content.

This course will equip you with the skills to thrive as a screenwriter, helping you develop a versatile portfolio across multiple creative mediums. You’ll gain practical insights into writing for film, TV, web dramas, and streaming services. From understanding narrative techniques to mastering script analysis, you'll refine your ability to craft compelling stories.

Expect hands-on experience in taking script meetings, working with producers, and learning the industry standards for script development. By the end of the course, you’ll have outlined your very own short film screenplay and be ready to take the next step in your writing career!

As well as developing written script analysis skills, you will study:​

  • How to take constructive script meetings with writers and/or producers and financiers

  • The pros and cons of different types of script assessment templates, with reference to European and American models

  • How to operate as a pro-active development executive

  • How to approach agencies and institutions to secure paid work

Across the programme you will have continuous assessment with particular focus on practical work required for the projects. In the UAL grading structure your final grade, Pass. Merit or Distinction is based on the final major project. 

Entry Requirements & Career Progression

Eligibility: Applicants need to be 18 and over. It is desirable for students to have attained GCSEs English and maths but applications from candidates with good levels of literacy and numeracy will be considered for mature candidates.  To apply, please visit the Buckinghamshire College Group website (link below). An interview will be part of the admission process to assess your suitability for the course.

Career Pathways: After completing this course, you’ll be equipped for a range of opportunities in the industry. Possible roles include talent assistant, studio assistant, agency assistant, film or television critic, script reader, freelance copywriter, content producer, editor, or working in film script development.

Funding

This course is run in conjunction with our partners Buckinghamshire College, the course will be split between Pinewood and Amersham College. If you are under 19 on the date of enrolment this course is funded.

 

There is an additional Material Fee of £350 which can be paid through the Online Store.If you are over 19 on the date of enrolment the course Fee is £6000. You will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan through the government's Student Finance website for £5420 and the remaining £580 can be paid in four instalments through the Online Store. This cost includes the Material Fee.
