Dive headfirst into the filmmaking process from Pre-Production through to Post-Production with our Directing and Cinematography course. Get hands-on and learn directly from top industry professionals who are not just teaching but actively shaping the industry.

They'll bring their real-world knowledge, vast experience, and invaluable contacts right into the classroom,

helping you carve out your own path in the film world.

 

You'll spend 80% of your time at our cutting-edge facilities at Pinewood Studios, with the remaining time at Buckinghamshire College Group’s Amersham Campus, complemented by independent study. This blend offers hands-on, real-world experience in the heart of the film industry, along with essential academic foundations.

What will I learn?

Step into the diverse world of filmmaking and discover which department sparks your interest, from Directing to Cinematography, sound, lighting, and beyond.

 

Directing: Unlock the potential to lead and inspire on set. You'll cultivate a sharp eye for visual storytelling, learn to communicate effectively, and develop the leadership qualities necessary to steer a project from concept to completion. Expect to immerse yourself in the complexities of directing feature films and high-end TV dramas, where your creative vision becomes the driving force behind captivating narratives.

 

Cinematography: Master the technical foundations of camera work, including lens selection, equipment handling, and the nuances of lighting on set and on location. Explore key cinematic concepts such as continuity, composition, camera angles, and shot selection to enhance visual storytelling. This hands-on training prepares you for your first industry role, equipped with a thorough understanding of what it takes to create visually stunning scenes.

  • Grammar of the shot (visual storytelling)

  • Cinematography and lighting

  • Casting and working with actors/Rehearsals and blocking

  • Advanced Camera work

  • Production overview (Call sheets, Risk Assessments, H&S, and Locations).

Across the programme you will have continuous assessment with particular focus on practical work required for the projects. In the UAL grading structure your final grade, Pass. Merit or Distinction is based on the final major project.

Entry Requirements & Career Progression

Eligibility: You must be 18 years or older to apply. While GCSEs in English and Maths are advantageous, we also welcome mature candidates who demonstrate strong literacy and numeracy skills. Career Pathways: Stepping into the world of TV and film isn't just about getting a qualification; it's about igniting a career. This course paves the way for opportunities across various media sectors, including film production companies, advertising agencies, music video production, and documentary filmmaking. Most roles in this industry operate on a freelance basis, offering you the flexibility to explore diverse projects. Kickstart your journey as a Trainee in camera or sound, a Show Runner, or a Production Assistant, and climb your way up in this dynamic industry.

Funding

This course is run in conjunction with our partners Bucks College Group, the course will be split between Pinewood and Amersham College. If you are under 19 on the date of enrolment this course is funded.

 

There is an additional Material Fee of £350 which can be paid through the Online Store. If you are over 19 on the date of enrolment the course Fee is £6000. You will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan through the government's Student Finance website for £5420 and the remaining £580 can be paid in four instalments through the Online Store. This cost includes the Material Fee.
